Mathematics

Intent

At Bosmere, we want our pupils to enjoy mathematics and appreciate it as an essential life skill. Our aim is for children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and be able to recall and apply what they have learnt accurately and quickly. We want children to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts which they can apply to a range of problems in real world contexts.

Developing and mastering a secure understanding of number is at the heart of our mathematics curriculum at Bosmere. We emphasise the use of multiple representations, including concrete, pictorial, structural and abstract (CPA), and we aim for children to be able to calculate competently using both written and mental methods and secure a depth of understanding across all mathematical strands.

Planning promotes the understanding of interconnectivity and relationships between strands leading to the achievement of fluency. Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to draw on a range of strategies and reason about their processes using mathematical language accurately. This endeavours to promote independence and resilience.

The planning and delivery of the curriculum is personalised or adapted to meet individual needs.  High expectations are set for all children and we encourage them to embrace challenge and understand the fundamental importance of mathematics in life beyond the classroom.

Implementation

To deliver our mathematics lessons and embed a mastery approach, we use White Rose Maths and Third Space learning resources.  Using this scheme, lessons are carefully ordered to build on prior learning in small, manageable steps.

Mathematics lessons are delivered daily in all year groups.

To help develop the rapid recall of number facts and times tables (automaticity), we use Numbots in the Early Years and Key Stage 1, and Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) in Key Stage 2.  Time is allocated in the school timetable and children are encouraged to practice at home.
