Year One Phonics Check Information

In the month of June 2018, all year one children will be required to complete the Phonics Screening Check to ensure their reading is progressing at a sufficient rate.

The video below contains information for parents regarding this government statutory test.

Later on this term we will be holding an information meeting regarding the Phonics Screening Check.  In the meantime if you have any further questions please see your class teacher.

Reading at Bosmere

Your child's phonics teacher may be sending home 'nonsense' words for your child to practise in preparation for this check. Please practise these as often as you can.

Other reading ideas for home include:

Magnetic letter words - children make words from magnetic letters and sound them out.

Word bingo games - write some words on a piece of paper then say a word and your child must find it on their 'bingo board' and colour it in.

Hide and find the word - hide some word cards and the child finds them then reads them.

Reading in everyday life - encouraging reading of road signs, cereal boxes, magazines etc really helps reading skills.

Speed read - time the children reading some words, how fast can they finish?!

Word splat - spread your word cards out on the floor, when you say the word the child slaps or stamps it with their foot.

Bedtime stories  Reading to your child is invaluable and will increase their vocabulary, enhance their imagination and encourage the correct use of sounds and expression whilst reading for themselves. It will also develop a great love of books!

If you would like some words for your child suited to their ability please ask your child's teacher who would be happy to help. Reading practise doesn't have to mean books!

If you have any further questions regarding reading, please talk to your child's teacher.
